Clinical Messaging

Surescripts Clinical Messaging service permits physicians as well as pharmacists on the Surescripts network to exchange various types of clinical information. The initial implementation of the service makes use of the Continuity of Care Record (CCR) and PDF-Healthcare (PDF-H) standards. Using these standards, pharmacy in-store clinics are able to securely, electronically share clinical summaries of patient visits with a patient’s physician. Surescripts is working with electronic medical record vendors to certify EMR software for the Clinical Messaging service. This will allow physicians using certified software to receive fully electronic encounter summaries into their electronic medical records system. Over time, the Clinical Messaging service will not only provide access to clinical summaries of patient visits to in-store clinics, but other provider facilities as well (e.g. other physician’s offices and hospitals).
