Get Your Pharmacy Connected

About

Enabling your pharmacy for e-prescribing via the Surescripts network is as straightforward as the following steps:

1   Confirm that your pharmacy management software has been certified by Surescripts.

Click here for a comprehensive listing of certified pharmacy software systems.
2   Contact your software vendor and ask them to enable your e-prescribing functionality. Specify that you want to establish a connection to the Surescripts Network (formerly the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, operated by Surescripts-RxHub). This will ensure that your pharmacy is able to receive new prescriptions and send/receive renewal authorizations electronically instead of by fax. Make sure you ask about:

a.   Software upgrades or patches you may need.
b.   Paperwork/contract updates that must be completed before your
      connectivity can be enabled.
c.   Transaction fees* or other related costs.
d.   Any training you and your staff will need to become familiar with the new        features of your system.
e.   How your vendor will keep your prescriber database updated to ensure that        you can communicate electronically with newly activated prescribers.

* Important Information Regarding Transaction Fees:
In addition to any startup or monthly software fees your vendor may charge, your pharmacy will pay a set cost per transaction to your technology vendor for each prescription renewal request you send or new prescription you receive over the Surescripts network. Your vendor can provide more detailed information on fees when you call them.

It is important to note that refills attached to a new or renewed prescription do not incur a transaction fee.

As an example, if a prescriber sends a new prescription electronically with 4 refills and your vendor charges $.25 per transaction, you should divide the $.25 by the sum of the original prescription plus the total number of refills to calculate your cost per prescription dispensed, which in this example would be just $.05.
